When this class first
started, the syllabus stated that we, ourselves are able to dictate how we want
to set up the schedule the course. It was up to us. The beauty of this class
was the self-accountability, either you wanted to do the class as a Tuesday-Thursday
type of class, or a Monday-Wednesday-Friday type of class, or a Weekend-Only
class, or a One-Day-A-Week class. It was our choice.
Every week, I’ve tried all sorts of arranged schedules when it came to doing the assignments given per week. I tried knocking out all the assignments on the weekends, I tried twice a weeks, and I even tried doing an assignment a day so that I wasn’t getting behind and doing things last minute. However, time and time again, I always ended up pushing the assignments back till the LAST couple hours before its due time. I tried many methods to try to help me with this postponement. To fight it, I started writing things on my phone with alarms, I bought a huge pinup calendar, and I even tried different schedule methods that best fit my agenda. These methods worked, but not for very long.
Time and time again, I saw myself getting back to my old self again and started procrastinating. And it showed when I went into my gradebook. Due to waiting till the last minute, the rush would cause me to make stupid mistakes. Mistakes with the videos not uploading on time or simply forgetting to declare.
Even though the little adjustments I would make to stop the procrastination worked, it just didn’t last long. We are near the end of the class and I am still failing at it. Even at this very assignment, I’ve failed to start it till 8PM.
For the most part, whenever I face moments of failure, I try to look back on what went wrong each time and try to see what I can do better next time. Trying new methods and re –evaluate when the method stops working. I see it as learning process. I think I haven’t really found the right method for setting up an effective study habit but I am pretty determined to try as many different types to see what works best.
The biggest takeaway for me in terms of repetitive failure as a student is motivation. As a student, I think it’s a constant struggle to keep yourself motivated. For me, it’s sort of like the feeling you get during the summer. The drive/motivation that builds inside you and the desire to go back to school and kick butt. I think if you are able to keep yourself in check like that throughout the whole semester of school, you’ll be GOLD.
I think the way this class is set up teaches valuable lessons. Not only time management and responsibility but also how to improve yourself and knowing there is always hope the next time around. Even when you fail week after week, you can hope that you’ll do better the upcoming week. I personally think this class really shed light into my procrastination problems that I didn’t think I had and I will continue to strive to become more on top of things.

Hey Brian,
ReplyDeleteI feel your struggle with trying to find a good schedule for this class. It's hard for me with other classes, work, and clubs. I think it's great that you're still motivated to find the best solution, for me motivation can be very hard to find. I completely agree that over the summer the desire to be a good student builds up, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Here's my blog http://triedbloggingendeduponpinterest.blogspot.com/2016/04/celebrating-failure.html
Brian,
ReplyDeleteYour post was interesting because it was similar to mine. I too have had a tendency in this class to push assignments back to their due dates and procrastinate. I have too found myself rushing to get the declare done just an hour before the due date time. I think it is awesome, however, that you have tried different ways to change this. Yes they have not all worked so far, but you are learning what does and doesn't work for you. That is what celebrating failure is to me. It is almost like it is not failure because you are actually learning more about the ultimate goal. This strategy does not work or is not the best so I have to look a different direction, where did the process go wrong and what will make it go right. This learning process shouldn't always be considered failure. It is only failure, in my opinion, if you give up. If you want to check out my blog the link is below.

It was interesting you talked about this class because I completely feel for you since I had a similar experience with this class as well. I'm glad that you've worked so hard to get to where you are in the class now. I had a very good celebrating failure post as well you can check it out here! http://jhoreckyblog.blogspot.com/2016/04/celebrating-failure.html
